Indwelling is one of a series of paintings about the work of the Holy Spirit. It shows the Holy Spirit being part of our very being, once we accept Jesus as Lord.

“When reading this account of the calming of the storm in Luke’s gospel, I was struck by the fact that professional fishermen were afraid of the storm. Then one word from Jesus restored calm. How often we feel as if we are in a storm that will overwhelm us, but Jesus provides the peace we need.”

Painting tip: I wanted to create a moody feeling in the sky and sea, so chose an ochre layer of under painting which can still be seen in the final picture. The colour you choose as a base layer has a big effect on the final outcome.” Sue Newham

The greetings card has this verse on the back: “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” Genesis 2 : 7

I used a range of different techniques and tools to give a varied texture to the piece and used a muted palette of colours.

“As I live in Mid Wales, sheep are an important feature of the landscape, and I have always felt drawn by the passages from the Bible which talk about the shepherd and his sheep. During the Covid lockdown, I read Isaiah 40 and wanted to convey some of the promises of God that I read in that chapter.” Sue

This is an oil painting on canvas, framed with a narrow gutter, then a slightly sloping profile, brushed gold frame.

The framed dimensions are 61cm by 50.5cm.

All of my paintings from 2020 have a sense of darkness and foreboding, but in each one, there is an element of hope and trust in a faithful Father.

As I painted I found myself adding more vegetation and then a stream of water to the valley. God reminded me that the valley we are passing through is the valley of the shadow of death. It is not like Death Valley in the USA which is so dry and hot that little can survive in it. The “shadow” of death is fear.  As we go through the valley, God provides water to refresh us, as well as his constant presence.

The painting measures 40cm by 50cm. It is heavily textured using tissue paper, strong PVA glue and textured mineral paste, to give a three dimensional effect to the chasm. It is over painted with acrylic paint.

The waterfall image is one that has become very personal, capturing the cry of my heart, “Lord, I want more of your love, power and presence in my life!” This is the seventh painting of the same title.
The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” John 7 : 37-38

Painting tip: “Oil paint is fantastic for being able to create veils of water over a subject, but you need to let each layer dry properly before adding another.” Sue Newham
