May sunshine over the Severn

On a glorious May day, I decided to take my painting stuff down to the river to paint “en plein air”. It was a beautiful day with people wandering across the rocks from time to time, to peer into the water. At that precise moment, I just didn’t want to be anywhere else. It was a time to relax and breathe.

The original picture is smaller then I usually tackle, because I had to make it portable. It is painted in oil paint on a canvas faced artist board and measures 30cm by 25cm.

The painting was finished in the studio as the sun moved around and my shady spot became too hot to continue outside.

Autumn Glory (Dolerw Park)

This oil painting captures a golden autumn scene in Newtown, Powys. Dolerw Park has a collection of amazing mature trees, and this particular day made me hold my breath at the beauty and stillness, with only the rustling of leaves and bird song.

Summer foxgloves

This painting was taken from a scene at the Roundton Hill Nature Reserve near Churchstoke, Powys. Sheep are kept on the hill to stop bramble and scrub growing up. This sheep was wandering among tall grass and foxgloves. A beautiful scene.

Severn summer

This painting captures a warm summer’s day when three teenagers were paddling in the River Severn in Newtown. They were laughing and shrieking as they braved the deeper water, in a moment of sheer enjoyment. The river itself was shady but patches of sunlight were playing through the trees.

Journeys in autumn

This painting is from a glorious autumn walk in 2012, which I initially painted in 2013. Although I was pleased with it at the time, I felt that there are things that could be improved. I have added a person walking a dog to the scene, which helps to add scale and perspective!

Dyfi estuary at Aberdovey

Who could ever tire of gazing down the beautiful Dyfi estuary? On this particular trip, we stayed at a B&B in Aberdovey and enjoyed walking and taking photographs throughout our short stay. This is one of many really lovely Welsh landscapes.

This painting was very challenging, with 10 boats, a group of buildings, two people and the dog! I really enjoyed doing it though.

River at Berriew

This oil painting started life “en plein air”, standing on the rocky river bank of a river which flows into the upper Severn. Berriew is a quiet rural village in Mid Wales. The waterfall behind my painting spot makes this a very picturesque place, and the tearooms in the village add to its appeal.

Llyn Clywedog

I painted this scene by applying layers of texture medium (like a very thick PVA glue) to the canvas, creating different textures in the areas of sky, water, hills and trees. Once that layer had dried, I used my fingers to apply the paint, before scratching into the surface and adding detail to give the impression of foreground plants. I really enjoyed creating the painting and have been pleased that several people have recognised where it is, despite it being painted in a loose style.

Llyn Clywedog lies in the hills above Llanidloes, Powys, close to the source of the River Severn.
