]]> This painting was taken from a scene at the Roundton Hill Nature Reserve near Churchstoke, Powys. Sheep are kept on the hill to stop bramble and scrub growing up. This sheep was wandering among tall grass and foxgloves. A beautiful scene.

]]> I wanted to paint a picture based on the parable of the lost sheep, but from a very close up viewpoint to make the story feel very personal. As the picture developed, it reminded me how helpless the sheep is. It has got into a dangerous situation through its own free will, but is completely unable to rescue itself. The only rescue comes through the shepherd, who is willing to risk injury, and in Jesus’ case death, to rescue the powerless.

]]> He tends his flock- original https://www.suenewham.co.uk/shop/he-tends-his-flock/ Sun, 03 Jan 2021 16:37:01 +0000 https://www.suenewham.uk/?post_type=product&p=12861 As I live in Mid Wales, sheep are an important feature of the landscape, and I have always felt drawn by the passages from the Bible which talk about the shepherd and his sheep.

This painting had a repaint in 2023, three years after being completed the first time. The purpose was to create more of a sense of depth between the shepherd and the background, which seems to have worked well.

"Painting tip- Don't be afraid to scrape the head off a crow and paint it in facing the other direction, if it improves the picture! And don't be afraid to revisit a picture to improve it. Every year your skills and your eye for detail get more honed, so you can always improve a picture." Sue Newham

]]> This painting is based on Isaiah 40 : 11 which says, “He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.”

“As I live in Mid Wales, sheep are an important feature of the landscape, and I have always felt drawn by the passages from the Bible which talk about the shepherd and his sheep. During the Covid lockdown, I read Isaiah 40 and wanted to convey some of the promises of God that I read in that chapter.” Sue

This is an oil painting on canvas, framed with a narrow gutter, then a slightly sloping profile, brushed gold frame.

The framed dimensions are 61cm by 50.5cm.
