You are with me

During covid, I felt, as most of us did, that we were walking through the valley of the shadow of death.

Psalm 23 says, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley (or the valley of the shadow of death), I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

I wanted to paint a picture of that verse to encourage myself that Jesus was walking with me every step of the way. I used tissue paper and PVA glue to build up texture in the rocks, along with some textures gel medium with pumice mixed into it to give a rough surface in places. Then I painted the surface with acrylic paint.

As I thought more about the valley of the shadow of death, I realised that it is not like Death Valley which is totally devoid of water and unable to sustain life. When we walk through valleys, there is always the water of God’s word to refresh us, and we can feed on God’s promises. I represented this in my painting by including a small river and green plants growing on the rocks. The light visible at the end of the valley shows that any dark and difficult time is temporary and that we have hope ahead. Jesus walks through the valley with us, as our closest companion.

The canvas measures 50cm by 40cm, is 2cm deep and  is painted around the edges. It is unframed.

Painting tip- “This picture is mainly rock, so I needed to use texture to add interest to what would otherwise be a very dark and bland background. “ Sue Newham
